Zone
Labs Inc.
Protect your PC from unsavory Internet
activity with ZoneAlarm. This free, easy-to-use security utility sets up a
personal firewall that's particularly well suited to DSL and cable modem
users. A computer with such an always-on connection has a permanent IP
address, which makes it especially vulnerable to information theft and other
attacks. ZoneAlarm lets you select one of three (low, medium, high) security
levels to separately apply to local and Internet traffic. In addition, you
can designate which programs on your computer are allowed to access the
Internet. Each time a new application attempts to access the Internet,
ZoneAlarm alerts you and asks whether or not to allow this access. You can
answer in such a way that access is granted without intervention in the
future. Anytime an event occurs that ZoneAlarm blocks, you're notified
immediately with a pop-up window that details the offense. The program's
system tray icon provides a handy menu that enables you to disable all
Internet activity with a mouse click. You can also set this "lock
up" to activate automatically after a selected period of inactivity or
whenever your screen saver activates.

CyberMedia,
Inc. (now McAfee)
Protect your data and privacy with Guard
Dog. By placing a variety of monitors and security measures at your
disposal, Guard Dog alerts you to and protects you from hidden and often
questionable Internet activities. It gives you absolute control over cookies
and personal information (password, contact, and credit card/bank
information) that's silently provided to Internet servers. If you like, you
can actually build lists of servers from which you will and won't accept
cookies. You can have Guard Dog alert you when unauthorized programs attempt
to access the Internet; automatically clean up your Internet cache and
history files each time you close your browser; and build lists of protected
files on your computer, selecting specific programs that are allowed to
access them. An unauthorized access attempt results in a warning that
provides you with the option of allowing or denying access by that
particular program. Other features include anti-virus protection, a
comprehensive virus encyclopedia, password protection, logging support, and
special support for monitoring suspicious ActiveX activity. Excellent
documentation is included.

Technologies Inc.
eSafe Protect Desktop is an Internet
content-security solution for individual PC users. It combines several
levels of protection, such as a highly configurable "sandbox
module" that enables you to protect your computer on an
application-by-application basis. It scans your PC for Internet-related
software and adds each to the protection module. You can selectively deny
each application the ability to read, write, delete, execute, and create
anything on either your entire PC or just selected drives/folders. A
learning mode is available to fine-tune this protection. You can also stop
users of your PC from accessing forbidden sites on the Internet. Block
specific URLs, ports, and Websites that contain keywords you select. eSafe
Protect Desktop also includes anti-virus support that you can use to
manually scan your computer and automatically check downloaded files. Other
features include automatic removal of cookies and cache files, and
multilanguage support. This is an excellent product that you'll find easy to
configure and use. Internet gateway and network versions are also available.

Neverhack is a small security utility you
can use to protect your PC from unauthorized users. It lets you to change
your logon and screen saver passwords, and, to play it safe, disable
password caching. You can also use it to scan your computer for remote
control Trojans, such as NetBus and Back Orifice, and browse, but not edit,
your startup files. Finally, it allows you to impose security restrictions
on your computer to prevent other users from changing critical system
settings. You can hide items from your Start Menu, disable Registry editing,
hide your desktop icons, and more. Various Control Panel applets, including
Network and System, can be hidden or disabled. Though not well documented,

ANNA
Ltd.
PC Security Guard is a clever little
program that helps protect you from attack by a variety of Internet-borne
Trojan horses. It checks for the presence of several well-known threats to
your computer, including Back Orifice, NetBus, Stealth Logger, HookDump,
KeyTrap, and Surfing Spy. It checks each and every way these and similar
programs can run when Windows loads, including your startup files and
pertinent Registry keys. It faithfully records any changes from the last
scan, which provides a good measure of protection against any Trojan horse
or hack you may have inadvertently downloaded. Although it doesn't provide
constant backgroung monitoring, PC Security Guard is very easy to use and
includes online help.
